The strongest animals in their domain. We know how they operate in all different animal species. They hunt, attack, and kill. Most humans follow this simple principle. Of course we have our vegetarians and vegans but even if the most hardcore anti meat eater was faced with starvation or a greasy burger sitting under a heat lamp, they would take the meat.
The Alpha on the other hand goes above and beyond the principle of the dominate species. The Alpha is not only the toughest animal in it's domain, but the toughest of it's individual species. They rule individual animal kingdoms, ruling over domains that can stretch a hundred miles in diameter and over a thousand square miles in some cases.
Alphas carry out acts that humans ourselves can not justify. They kill the young that they did not father or birth, sometimes even eating them. They will single out and kill others that are too weak or stubborn. More importantly than all this, when they carry out these ruthless act, they don't feel remorse for what they have done.
Human's never truly understood what it would be like to have an Alpha. Throughout history there were a few situations were small groups would be segregated from society for too long and the strongest of the group might act in a way that would lead one to believe he was an Alpha. But even in these cases there is always the thought in the back of the mind that they will soon be back in society, no matter how dire their situation is.
Our society in general is what keeps our species from forming Alphas. There will always be the larger and stronger male, one who will always win in a fight, one who will steal, rape, and murder without a second thought. But there is always the counter to the Alpha, the Omegas. For every thug and rapist, we have teams and squads of law enforcement and legal departments to keep them in check. In the world of the modern dominate human species there is just no room for any Alpha predator.
What happens though when our table gets turned. When the human species is not only no longer the dominate form on the planet, but are facing a possible global extinction. I knew the Alphas were coming back. I could see it in almost every group I came into contact with or saw through the seclusion of my blinds. I could hear the screams of pain from their abuse of power just as much as I could here the scream from those being eaten alive in those days.
For you see in the world of the walking dead moaning hordes of cannibals are not the only thing to worry about. We were reverting back to our barbaric natures. The human Alpha was coming back, carving out territory in a land smothered in the sea of the dead. Monsters that were now out populating the beings that they used to be were the ones who no longer had an Alpha... until me.
